Africa’s refinery alkylation unit capacity [one of the conversion units used in petroleum refineries] increased from 34 million barrels per day (mbd) in 2018 to 59mbd in 2023 at an average annual growth rate (AAGR) of 10.9%. It is expected to increase from 59mbd in 2023 to 123mbd in 2028 at an AAGR of 14.6%.
Nigeria, Egypt and South Africa are the three countries in Africa that accounted for the entire alkylation unit capacity in 2023. Lagos I (Nigeria), Amreya (Egypt), Port Harcourt I (Nigeria), Kaduna I (Nigeria) and Sasolburg (South Africa) are the major refineries with active alkylation units in the region.
Nigeria had the highest refinery alkylation unit capacity in Africa in 2023 with 43mbd. It also witnessed the highest capacity growth among the three countries between 2018 and 2023 with an AAGR of 19.5%. Egypt and South Africa had refinery alkylation units capacities of 9mbd and 7mbd in 2023.
In Africa, upcoming alkylation units are expected to commence operations in 14 refineries. Ibeno I (in Nigeria), Richards Bay (in South Africa), and Lobito (in Angola) are the major refineries with upcoming alkylation projects in Africa between 2024 and 2028.
