Asia’s refinery alkylation unit capacity [one of the conversion units used in petroleum refineries] increased from 460 million barrels per day [mbd] in 2018 to 589mbd in 2023 at an average annual growth rate (AAGR) of 4.9%. It is expected to increase from 589mbd in 2023 to 765mbd in 2028 at an AAGR of 5.2%.
China, Japan, India, South Korea and Taiwan are the key countries in Asia that accounted for almost 90% of the total alkylation unit capacity of the region in 2023. Jamnagar II (India), Ulsan (South Korea), Daesan I (South Korea), Dayushan Island (China) and Limay (Philippines) are the major refineries with active alkylation units in the region.
China had the highest refinery alkylation unit capacity in 2023 with 198mbd. Other key countries in terms of refinery alkylation unit capacity were Japan, India and South Korea with 109mbd, 105mbd and 86mbd respectively. China witnessed the highest capacity growth among all the countries between 2018 and 2023 with an AAGR of 23.3%.
By 2028 in Asia, upcoming alkylation units are expected to commence operations in 24 refineries. Vadinar and Panipat (in India) and Khalifa (in Pakistan) are the major refineries with upcoming alkylation projects in Asia between 2024 and 2028.
