Global ammonia capacity is poised to see considerable growth over the next five years, potentially increasing from 240.38mtpa in 2023 to 311.86mtpa in 2028, registering a total growth of 29.7%. 114 planned and announced ammonia projects are expected to come online, predominantly in North America followed by FSU over the upcoming years.
North America is expected to add a capacity of 29.96mtpa from 21 new build planned and announced projects, whereas, for expansion, it is expected to add a capacity of 1.24mtpa from two planned and announced projects.
Within North America, the major capacity addition is from an announced project, the Ascension Clean Energy Donaldsonville Ammonia Plant with a capacity of 7.20mtpa. It is expected to come online in 2027. It is followed by the announced St Charles Clean Fuels St James Parish Ammonia Plant, with a capacity of 3mtpa. It is also expected to commence production of ammonia in 2027.
In FSU, the major capacity addition will be from the planned Nakhodka Fertilizer Plant Nakhodka Ammonia Plant with a capacity of 1.80mtpa. It is expected to commence production of ammonia in 2026. It is followed by the announced Kemerovo Azot Kemerovo Ammonia Plant 3 with a capacity of 1.16mtpa. It is also expected to come online in 2026.
