Global urea capacity is poised to see considerable growth over the next four years, potentially increasing from 241.92 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) in 2023 to 307.47mtpa in 2030, registering a total growth of 27.1%. Globally, 67 planned and announced urea projects are expected to come online by 2030 predominantly in the Former Soviet Union (FSU) followed by Asia.

The FSU is expected to add a capacity of 17.80mtpa from 17 new build planned and announced projects. As for Asia, a total capacity of 13.52mtpa is likely to come online from 13 planned and announced projects.

Within the FSU, the majority of urea capacity additions stem from upcoming projects in Russia, which have a total capacity of 10.19mtpa. The highest capacity addition is from a planned project, the Nakhodka Fertilizer Plant Nakhodka Urea Plant. It is expected to commence operations in 2026 with a capacity of 3mtpa. The Lukoil Oil Company Budyonnovsk Urea Plant follows next, with a capacity of 2mtpa. The start year for this plant is likely to be 2027.

In Asia, the majority of capacity additions are in India with 9.28mtpa anticipated to be added by 2030. The highest capacity addition is from the Reliance Industries Jamnagar Urea Plant, which is located in the Gujarat state and is projected to come online in 2026 with a capacity of 2.60mtpa. Matix Fertilisers & Chemicals Panagarh Urea Plant 2 represents another significant upcoming project in the country that is expected to add a capacity of 1.46mtpa by 2028.
