Notably, the number of future of work-related patent applications in the oil & gas industry was 683 in Q1 2024, versus 909 in the prior quarter.
The top five companies accounted for 27% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Halliburton filed the most future of work patents within the oil & gas industry in Q1 2024. The company filed 46 future of work-related patents in the quarter, compared with 68 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Fuji Oil with 40 future of work patent filings, Schlumberger (37 filings), and China Petrochemical (33 filings) in Q1 2024.
Patenting activity was driven by China with a 30% share of total patent filings
The largest share of future of work related patent filings in the oil & gas industry in Q1 2024 was in China with 30%, followed by the US (28%) and Japan (8%). The share represented by China was 14% lower than the 44% share it accounted for in Q4 2023.
